Is it the driving that scares you or the fact that you have to take a test? It sounds like a classic case of test anxiety to me. Perhaps you can enroll in a driving school that offers on-hand training along with classroom studies to better prepare you for the DMV tests. You'll be accustomed to having someone beside you watching every move you make, and you'll build the confidence you need to take the state exam. If that is not an option, get a permit and go driving with a friend. Have them critique your performance and offer suggestions. Maybe form a step-by-step guide to follow. i.e. 1) sit in seat; 2)adjust seat; 3) adjust mirrors; 4) fasten seat belt, etc. Practice it until you can do it in your sleep. All you really need is a little confidence. Good luck!

You have a very strong fear that you will not pass your test, or that you simply cannot do it. You must conquer that fear before you take a drivers test. Find a person that you feel comfortable with, and have them go with you when you practice driving. You must most of all believe you can do it, and build up your confidence. There are drivers out there that have passed, that I have no idea how in the world they ever got their license, but they did, and I'm sure you are much better than they are, you must believe that as well. Have you ever been in an accident, that left you afraid to drive? I have had bad experiences on major highways already when others I knew were driving, and it scared me to the point that I take all back roads except I do roads as long as they are not MAJOR highways! We all have fears we must get over. When I took my test, I remember I was VERY nervous, but I took it step by step, and passed the first time, and even surprised myself. Just relax, and think that you CAN do it. As many people that have gone through taking their tests that passed and made it, I'm sure you can too!! Good luck, you'll be fine!

It sounds like more test anxiety than anything else. It seems like you aren't scared of driving itself, but more of the actual road test. This is pretty common where people freeze up when they have to take a test despite knowing the material. You also said that you postpone the test often, so it sounds a lot like fear of what might happen instead of a realistic fear of what will happen. I think you need to just take the test and convince yourself that you will do fine. Also, tell whoever is taking you for your test that they can't let you call and cancel it that you are going unless there is 20 inches of snow.....maybe not that much but you get my point.
If you get nervous, there are relaxation techniques you can practice such as taking slow, deep breaths, counting to 10, and making a fist tightly and relaxing it (do this one at a stop sign or red light, not while actually driving).
Good luck

I am not being sarcastic. I am being serious. I do understand.
OK let's talk about this for minute. Have you always been scared of taking tests or is it only the DMV test?
What is making you nervous about taking the test? Are you afraid you are going to fail? Are you afraid that if you drive you will have a wreck and that is why you are scared to drive?
What is causing your anxiety?
Only once have you identified what is making you afraid will you be able to address the issue and deal with it.
Example. I had a really bad wreck during a snow storm. Now it is hard for me to drive during winter when there is a chance it could snow. It is so bad that I have had major anxiety attacks. Some days I can manage to control it but there are many days when I can't. I mean I have anxiety attacks before I even get behind the wheel.
During snowy weather I literally have to talk myself through each turn of the wheels to get where I need to go. It is very hard. There are some days when my boyfriend has to drive me because I simply can't do it. So I do understand. I have been dealing with this for 20 years.
What I am saying is you have to figure out what is scaring you to drive and then find a way to control it.
It becomes like the story the little engine who could. I think I can I think I can. Now he was trying to get up the mountain. But the same principal applies. You keep telling yourself. I can do this. I can do this. If that does not work for you, you may need to seek outside help. Like the people whom have such a fear of flying they go to classes to learn to control their fear. Then the last session is going up in a plane.
I believe in you. You can take the test and pass with flying colors. no pun intended.
PS it may be in your best interest not to ride with drunk drivers any more.

1. Start out some place safe. Have your friend take you to an empty parking lot or field and practice accelerating and braking and other basic stuff.
2. Set up some cones to drive through.
3. Sit in your car in the driver seat and have your friends drive past you.
4. Have your friends do the same thing and drive past their cars to similate traffic
5. Ok ready for the road. Have friends take you to a seldom used road and practice driving. If a car or obstact comes, stop until it passes or you feel comfortable.
6. Now try going to small town and practice looking at traffic lights, speed signs, and other signs
7. Next go to a country road again with lots of traffic
8. After that try going onto the highway
9. Once you are good with the highway, try practicing in a major city nearby
10. Now you are ready for the test.

I think you might have a phobia for this kind of thing--really, there are phobias for everything. I mean, if you don't get nervous taking other kinds of tests, then that's probably it. You should see a doctor if that's the case--maybe it has to do with you driving before without a license, and that makes you scared that you won't pass so you unconsciously just try to worm your way out of the test because you're scared of that.

Sounds like you may have a form of anxiety. Test anxiety is a tough one...but you should take the test. The worst that will happen is that you will fail it, which is NOT the end of the world and you will know what to expect next time. So, take a deep breath and GO FOR IT. You'll be fine!

What is it about the test or driving that scares you the most? You need to identify your fears and meet them head on. Life is filled with fears both legitimate and imaginary. It is up to you to figure out if your fears are real or imagined. Then ask yourself after you've figured them out if driving is what YOU truly want to do or is it something that SOMEONE else wants you to do.
Look at all your issues and if you can't come to any conclusions I suggest you talk to a counselor about them. Hopefully you can come up with a plan that will be suitable to you to live with.
Good luck and I wish you well.

Theres no mention of how old you are.
You can try take someone with you for the test. Someone who youre close to. S/he can be a good distraction from you being so nervous.
Its good to see a face that we're familiar with, someone we can talk to and make a laugh out of any possible driving boo boo - it relaxes us and boosts our confidence.
