To create something that is timeless you have to look at the era in which you are creating it...its easy to get inspired from things around you but its the fundamentals that are always a part of life that will make something lasting. For example a few answers ago someone mentioned the little black dress, from year to year this basic essential fashion item will adapt to the seasons fashion slightly but not enough for the dress not to be worn year after year thus making it timeless but add to a design thats contemporary the dress is only wearable for a season.
Timeless art and literature becomes timeless because of its audience and appreciation. The great masters of fine art were revolutionary in their time which is why we know them today, but this does not mean that when their works were created they were timeless in fact they were probably frowned upon by the public. This is hard to replicate as in todays society it is much harder to create something revolutionary as nothing is 'new' or 'different' any more.
Timeless can not be created as such, its a title adopted. Quality can help to create something that is lasting though. You look at antiques, people will pay good money for excellent quality antique furniture but not all of it is and even though a cabinet maybe 150 years old if the workmanship inst there people will not pay money for it making it junk!

If you set out to make something timeless, and that is your aim, you will fail. If you set out to create something, and do it really well, then it has a chance of being timeless. Things are seen as being "timeless" when their excellence and brilliance are as obvious to audiences hundreds and thousands of years after its creation. This type of object/artwork tends to reflect on human nature, since politics and trendy "issues" come and go constantly, yet human nature never changes. This is why plays like Shakespeare are as relevant today as they were when they were written. Of course, it's more difficult now for most people to understand the language they're written in, but all the same, once you get beyond that, or see an adaptation, you see the universal truths about the fundaments of human beings.
So create for the sake of creating, and try to capture some insight YOU have of humanity in your work - it may have all been done before, but you can bring your own angle and perspective on it - that's what originality is about, and basically, that's what creativity is about. Good luck!

Before you ask "How can I create........?" please ask "what should I create that is timeless?" . Then you will be working towards something instead of a blind shot in the dark.
By timeless you are referring to some creativity or creation that is enduring and long lasting. More importantly, what I think "hidden" in your question is the urge or eagerness that YOU . as the creator, should be remembered always. LIke Michaelangelo, Picasso......
You can create something only if you are very good or innovative in that art. Let me make a simple guess.
If you are a sort of scientist you could consider the following innovation and everyone will remember YOU. You can invent a mirror that shows you the same way you are. The present mirror inverts the image , showing left in right and right in left. By Liquid cystal method or some such thing you could develop a mirror that will will show you as you see with TV camera.
You will be always remembered by humanity.

Something timeless is usually something that reveals the essential truth of its subject.
A book can be timeless because it describes situations or feelings which are understood the world over, and in any decade or century. (Shakespeare?)
A painting could be timeless if its artistry is so complete that it reveals a truth about light or beauty or life which remains valid for ever. (Rothko?)
The test of time, and I assume you mean that the work of art never 'dates', is whether it is as effective today as it was the moment it was created, and luckily for us, many great artists and authors have been able to create such works.
What would be interesting would be to find out which paintings and which books are thought of as "timeless".
To answer your question, you can only put your heart, soul and talent into your book or painting, do the very best you can, giving yourself to it utterly, and then hope it proves timeless in its quality.

Timelessness in art lies within ones acceptance, meaningfulness as a sign and interpretations. There is no definite way of knowing what will become timeless or evergreen. A certain work of art becomes timeless if the culture involved (where the art is produced) is willing to bring along its meaning as it evolves into the future. One way that one could attempt in achieving this is by being critical, sensitive and observant when producing the art.

I suppose it's something people will never tire of, something that won't ever go out of fashion! The little black dress, a smart trouser suit, a Beatles album, a Renoir, Wuthering Heights. I don't know if you can decide what's timeless! I think it's for time itself to decide!

a concept is timeless...but more likely, this concept already exists...and you cannot create it...you only find it...just as you cannot create a fundamental truth, you only find it.
there are other things that could make things timeless...but these are not to be discussed at this point.
