Aesthetically,Macs seem to have more visual appeal compared to laptops. Though Toshiba, Sony, Asus and Fujitsu (just to name a few) have pretty nice exteriors, they are not exactly in the same league as apple (i feel Sony's Vaio is a close substitute).

But what really makes macs stand out from regular laptops is the ease and comfort of using the Mac OS X. Windows xp is not the best OS out there, it is rather problematic. Perhaps this is one of the reason, other than being 'converted' by the ipod experience that led people to feel that macs are more superior.

It is the unique experience that you are paying for a laptop and more importantly an OS that is designed for you specifically. Mac OS X is really a fascinating experience for PC users who have used computers all their life thinking that it is a chore and only for the geeks. Mac OS X is designed for the common people, simple to use, pleasant to look at.

Of course with Microsoft's vista on sale... Perhaps this would put regular laptops back on par with macs. However, this is all too early to say.

Let me answer your question before I get violent reactions from fanatics. Actually, iBooks have their good qualities particularly in the Multimedia arena. A lot of iBook users are very loyal and they find it easy to use. iBook's OS has a lot of functionalties which other OS does not have. As for the mainstream or defacto standard laptops the PC Laptops (One's with Intel, AMD, TransMeta chips which runs Windows & Linux OS). They also have their strength. One of which is the availabilty and variety of applications that will run plus their compatibilty with existing set-ups. In the market there are more PC store than Apple stores. Apple tries hard to deploy a lot of iStore but let's face it there are more shops who sells PC laptops that iBook. If that doesn't bother you MAC is better but if you want a to use a system which almost everyone uses PC laptops is better. I don't want to say which is better. It's more of saying which is more your to your liking. I hope my answer helped a little.
