Hamsters are native to the Syrian Arab Republic. They live alone and are omnivorous. Gerbils can be found in various parts of Asia and Africa. The gerbil that you are likely to find in a pet store is a Mongolian gerbil.
As far as hand feeding, no wild animal should ever be fed.

when i was little, i had many hamsters, they love to be petted.just be gentle when holding them and stroke their heads.mine would love to climb all over me go up one arm across the shoulders then down the other arm.
you can also get a hamster ball,it allows them to be in a protective ball in case you have other pets in the house, and they get to wonder where ever they want.
