I believe it's the symbol for the British pound, like $ is for the U.S dollar.

It's the British pound. It's equivalent to the American $.

it is the British currency, which is called a pound.
other examples:
Japan is yen
India is rupee
Indonesia is rupiah
Thailand is baht
Philippines is peso
Malaysia is ringgit
U.S. is USD (US dollar)
Singapore is S$ (Singapore dollar)
etc...

so, Britain is pound (British pound). just a country's currency :)
