h 4h 2h hb b 2b 4b 6b these are the primary pencils i use when i shade. the brand i use is prismacolor turquosie. if you don't want to use those pencils or charcol you could also use an ebony pencil its just as dark as a 6b its a softer lead. i hope this helps

The thing is traditional fairy wings are transparent so you'd see through them. You can use regular colored pencils but you have to develope a really light touch. Another thing is that when they cross over in front of each other they will appear darker when they double up. An example of this would be tint for car windows. Put on one layer and it could be dark. cut out some shapes from the same rol and put them on the first layer the shapes will be darker but you can still see through them,

The shadows of the wings would be very faint dark enough to knoe they're there but much lighter than the rest of the shadow. the shadow the actual fairy throws is dependant on where you have your light source. Consider what time of day you're putting your fairy in. Morning and evening will have long shadows and mid day will have short.

Hope this helps
