Every time i change the channel there's some supermodel(male and or female) dressing up in a fat and or "ugly"suit . Do we really need them to prove to us that "unatractive " (as the world categorizes) are treated differently than "attractive " people. Are people really that out of touch with reality?

I agree, there was a lady news anchor here in San Diego who dressed up as a FAT lady....walked around all day as a fat lady, then went back to the studio and took it all off, only to say something stupid like" yes, it's just awful to be a fat person". I still to this day will NOT WATCH HER!

You don't need proof to decide a question relating to society or to morals. But you should have, available for you to study, enough good evidence to provide a statistical basis for making your decision. The reason is that much of what "everybody knows" simply isn't true.

What everybody believes often originates as a marketing ploy, or as a political dogma, among a small group of people who use mass media and propaganda tricks to seed the beliefs in a lot of people at the same time.

When those people go out to form their working and social communities, they gossip as people usually do. And they engage in social climbing and intellectual competitiveness. And those seeded beliefs reappear as intellectual 2nd-raters try to show off how well-informed they are about life in general.

In other words, the ideas imparted by some crafty fellow's marketing strategy or political dogma are reinforced among the laypublic as part of their primate display behavior. The assumption (most of the time) is that the person repeating the beliefs has some special expertise in the matter, so the next person to hear the ideas GOT THE IDEA that she, too, could appear lored and lofty by repeating the implanted beliefs with a confident air to the next person she saw.

Anyway, that's how a lot of what "everybody knows" comes into being.

In this case, however, I agree with you. I think that attractive people are treated better than unattractive people. But I'm just a beach bum. If I were a legislator, or a judge, or an official responsible for public policy, I'd be obliged to make a careful and thorough check of the evidence before making any decision in regard to what to do about it.

Read some of the ideological, relativistic answers you will get to this question and you will have your answer. I read the answers and only one or two were connected to reality. Physical beauty and the effects have been quantified for some time among scientists, but you have asked your question in the social science section. Have fun pouring through the ideological driven, moralistically fallacious and relativistically ridiculous answers you will receive, all being about rationalization and justification; not science.

I wouldn't be surprised. Society telling us what to think and what to feel is attractive and what isn't. Society is brainwashing us into thinking is normal and acceptable. People are generally treated differently. A great deal of it is what society has taught us and has told us, what is acceptable and what isn't. People should have their own standards on what beauty is. Society is just a way of keeping us in line. Meaning controlling us. That is why television and other medias shouldn't be taken seriously. Life should handled in what makes a person happy and the way they live their lives. Society is always looking for ways to control mankind. What is the norm? No one actually knows. Being true to yourself is the best thing.

Unfortunately it is in our genes ... There was a study done with babies , which were presented to handsome people , and also unattractive ones , and every one of the babies that are still innocent smiled and felt comfortable with the pretty , and shunned the not so ones , of course you would think an adult would be fairer but is not so ,it is hard wired in our brains to search for the beauty in things and people .

Sadly, mostly on TV it is a fashion and looks contest. Notice how many of the female TV news casters are wearing makeup like porno magazine centerfolds and then the low-cut blouses. I guess they are desperate for ratings. You don't see too many plain or homely people on TV any more. There is not much substance in the media it seems.

Hi, lets put it this way. If your fat, you get treated differently. And looked down upon by men and women.

When your thin, they say they can get the job done. It doesn't matter if your ugly.As long as you are thin. My cousin Mike has this girl friend with a face only a mother can love.I am talking very unattractive. But she has a skinny body. And thats okay with him.It is to bad what our society has turned out to be. It is very sad indeed!

In comedy, sometimes it is the opposite. Sometimes the weird looking people learn to use this to their advantage, and are more successful in the field. Thus they may gain more respect as smart actors than attractive people who aren't as creative or funny.

As for people who dress poorly, maybe they want to be left alone. Maybe they don't want to be noticed and confronted. I understand some people may use their extreme weight to shield themselves, to create a social barrier to hide behind, so they don't have to face their real fears or anxieties.

If so, I would be more prone to have compassion for them than judgment. Who knows what situation they are in or have suffered in the past. It cannot be too good.

Nope. I go out with my friends/sister and everyone looks at them, not me. The good thing is, when I see a freak trying to approach my friends/sister, I just stick close and the freak goes away!!! I count my plainness as a blessing! And yes, people, especially Americans are wayyyyyy superficial. Just look at our ads and everything. There's a really good Dove commercial on YouTube. I love what Dove is doing with their realbeauty campaign!

I think that by doing these experiments, society is trying to further emphasize the importance of physical beauty.
