If not, what are we doing in Iraq?

I will answer in a different way, if I may. I do not think Ideals can be spread by military force. Woodrow Wilson once said of WWI, that the reason he was entering was because it would be "The War to end all Wars". Well, this ideal obviously was not true, and left many Americans disillusioned. Skip to Vietnam, to stop the spread of communism. Communism still spread, it had to collapse on itself, it was not defeated. Now in Iraq, to spread Democracy. Unfortunately, I do not think it will happen. I am glad Saddam is out of power, he killed many people, but the Iraqis will not have a democracy unless they want one. To be honest, even the republicans are beginning to wonder what we are doing in Iraq. And I dont know the answer, and I dont know why no one else does.

Many “ideals” fall flat on the ground, doing more harm than good. Whether they are based on assumptions or incorrect information, a belated realization of the mistakes does come sooner or later.

Think of the world as a Global Village with many big and small villages. Now think of a man with high ideals who goes visiting other villages to help them destroy all the pests.

When he discovers a hornet's nest in a village, he brings young men from his own village to get rid of them by stoking the nest with a long pole.

After the the man sees his young men lying on the ground, stung by swarms of hornets, he realizes that sending them on a pest control mission wasn't such a good idea.

Now he is willing to make amends and says, "Live and let live."
That is perhaps the way you many people may be thinking now.

If you really want to contribute a constructive idea in the midst of all the death and destruction that is taking place, you have to make allowances for the "errors of judgment" in which not one man but many men were involved.

American invasion of Iraq was made with a mandate from the Congress, with full backing of both the Republicans and Democrats.

You cannot think in hypothetical terms by asking, “Can ideals be defeated with military force?”

Your definition of "ideals" is certainly different than mine.
I think your referring to the demented ideology of the Islamic terrorists?

We are fighting a small minority of Islamic dirt bag radicals that think indiscriminately killing thousands of men, women and children can somehow win them converts and an eventual victory in their agenda of world domination.
And, yes, I think military force is the only "diplomacy" these psychos can understand.

Depends on how many people are followers of the ideals, and how strong that ideal is.

Yep.... you just can't be squeamish... You must actually *use* the force. In Iraq we are fighting a surrogate war with Iran, who is the real enemy.

No, but you can defeat those who hold those ideas.

I don't care how idealistic you are, if you're dead.............well it your ideals don't really matter much.
