Actually, Francis Scott Key wrote the phrase "Land of the Free" as part of the Star Spangled Banner.
He wasn't a Founding Father, he was a poet and a lawyer who witnessed the attack on Fort McHenry in 1814. It was one of the battles of the War of 1812.
The phrase is referring to the USA.

"land of the free"refers to our country where we are free to live where we want, work where we want and where all citizens have a voice in their goverment through the vote, demonstrating when something or someone is not liked- express our views without fear of reprisal or imprisonment. Free does ,however does not mean do as we want totally for there are still rules of acceptable behaviour set by society -the majority- that we live in.Step out of those bounds and then there are consequences that we must deal with -the ultimate being imprisoned or even being put to death-but even those only follow after a trial by our peers and being judged guilty and after appeals of that guilty verdict failed. The consequences also are in line with the act like will not be thrown in jail and forgotten for stealing a loaf of bread as did occur in England and other countries where the people who founded this country and formed the goverment came from ages ago.In the land of the free we pretty much choose our life.

Free to smoke anywhere, free to carry a gun, free to tell those with feeling of entitlement to get off their ***, free to be politically incorrect, and free to here the truth from the bias liberal media!

Or were you meaning the "Land of Free Stuff"?
