And as a side thought..favorite John Steinbeck book. I can't. I can say my favorite all time read was chapter 14 of Grapes of Wrath.

...not to my knowledge. If you're looking for some older, "classic" stuff on social injustice I find that a number of Russian authors writing in the late 19th, early 20th century (i.e. Tolstoy, Turgenev, Dostoevsky) have a lot to say about the injustices inherant in the Russian socio-economic system in which they lived. A lot of what they say is still relevant, too...especially within the context of critical theory. I've not had that much exposure to Steinbeck, but Stephen Crane (dead) also had a lot to say about social injustice in the U.S.
