Now if they like Literature, those are great books. When I was 15 I was on a high reading level, but I HATE literature. My favorie books are "Haters" by Alissa Valdes Rodriguez, but I also read Sidney Sheldon books(but those really aren't age appropriate). I like "A Certain Slant of Light" by Laura Whitcomb. Then there are two books by Dana Davidson called "Played" and "Jason & Kyra" A male might not like these books though. But I would try the Young Adult section of the library, they have a pretty good selection. If they are a girl, they might also want to try Chic lit. Most are funny, but some have sex scenes that may not be appropriate.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon is a fantastic book about a young man living with autism. It was initially written for children but is also a cracking read for adults, and I think a 15-year old would enjoy it.

They could also try 1984 by George Orwell, The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, or you can get some more suggestions from here:

I think perhaps first thing to find out is which type or genre of book does s/he like? Whatever genre s/he prefers, there will be excellent choices for her or him to read.

Like the earlier poster stated, many 15 year old males read Science Fiction and/or Fantasy Novels, while females may read those and mystery or "teen dramas". However, there are several excellent authors in these genres. However, whichever genre s/he prefers, you can always intersperse many traditional "classics" (Shakespeare, Orwell, Steinbeck, et. al.), with whatever they read. The goal is to expose her/him to a wide variety of voices from which s/he can learn.

Once you know which genre s/he favors, an Internet search (or question here) or any good book store employee worth their salt can direct you to the better selections within that genre.

I read One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey whe I was 15 or 16. It's an incredible. You could also try more classic works. I'm reading Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson right now. I read it in junior high school, and even though I'm a sophomore in college (and an English major), I'm rereading it and LOVING it.

The Inheritance series by Christopher Paolini. "Eragon" and "Eldest" are currently out and I'm awaiting the third book with bated breath! Great for a teen and fabulous for Adults.

Even the Lord of Rings trilogy is worth it at that age. It will be a series they read agin as they get older and take away something new....

Tim O'Brien. Anything by him, but start with "The things they carried"

Also look into the classics. Pride and Prejudice, Jane Eyre, To Kill A Mocking Bird, Grapes of Wrath, of Mice and Men.

I know. I don't remember the author, but Crow Lake is an excellent novel.

Beau Geste by C. Percival Wren is a wonderful book (and don't be fooled by the name, it's not in French, it might have been written in French but you can get it in English). I loved it a lot. Beau Geste means 'noble gesture' and it's a book about three brothers who end up in the French foreign legion. Don't take my word for it though. You should check into it...
