Constantine opened a second capital--Constantinople (later Byzantium, now Istanbul). When he died his three sons fought it out for succession, Constantius won. When he was gone Theodorus ruled. Theodorus had two idiot sons who simply could not get along, so Honorius and Arcadius split the empire in two. Honorius inherited a strong Goth army to the north and Arcadius got the Persians to the east.
