Knightscharge...how right you are. There are most on here who will give the impression they're independent. You'll find them in questions about Muslims, gays, Romany travellers et cetera - the kind of subjects where they can get things off their chests after a dinnertime glance at the worst (British) tabloids - I'm influenced to a certain degree, but would keep opinions to myself, unless with friends or family...if I, or they are a wee bit too strong in opinion, we will accept the other side, whereas on here...it seems people will spout an answer (or question) in order to get heated (not measured or thought out - too boring) returns.

To a certain extent we all are. Let me explain:
Even those that would claim to not be influenced by the popular media will be due to the fact that tv, radio and newspapers shape the world around us.
The clothes we wear are a product of thepopular media. Even the way we shop today and the food that we eat are a product of the advertising of our times. The biggest medium for this advertising is tv.
I think I'm getting a bit deep now...

The answer is clearly yes. If you believe what you read or hear, then you take this information into account. If you hate what's published in newspapers and what's shown on the TV you don't just disregard it, you place it as the opposite of your views therefore you ARE influenced by. Any opinon towards the papers and tv has an effect on your views in general.

Would like to say I wasn't but as this is where I get a lot of my information from then I would have to say I am. Only in instances where I have received information from other reliable sources e.g. my trade union, through studying a subject etc would I say I was not influenced by tv. However like most people I do have opinions on certain subjects which are not reflective of the views of the media, usually subjects which I really care about.

Influenced but not convinced unless I am able to consider a wide cross section of opinion. I reserve reaching a definitive opinion until I have read, listened and seen as many competing sections of media as possible. How else can one form an opinion on anything unless using media? Some of those answering the question respond in the negative; where, how do they gather sufficient impartial information to make a reasoned judgement?

paper no as i do not really read it. TV, sometimes the ads influence me to try new products or influence my decision on what film to see in the cinema and such like. it does not influence me to go out having 1 night stands, killing people or doing other sorts of stuff. the news is always doctored to show what the channel bosses want to purvey and therefore does not influence to a great extent my opinion of religion, politics and any other topics

Unfortunately everyone is influenced by both the papers and the t.v (some times this is a good thing some times bad!)
the media is a powerful tool!
we have to realise this and only take some of what we read with a pinch of salt! I'm in the Media my self so i know how cruel / amazing the press can be!!!!

everyone is, television is the most ubiquitous form of media. you'll always have a few pseudo-intellectuals bragging about how newsapers and tv are full of lies, propaganda, whatever. the thing is, especially in the case of some newspapers, they're clearly not offering an objective point of view. that doesn't mean you aren't influenced by them. people have said the television networks use propaganda - this has influenced them in to thinking the people with power (the media) tries to manipulate people. you see....it's almost impossible not to be influenced, it would effectively mean you don't have an opinion

I think this is unavoidable as everything on T.V. can influence a person.
Information seems to be a double edged sword, on the one hand it helps you to come to a better understanding and broader perspective on a given subject, on the other, the media can be used as a tool to brainwash the masses.
Athough I think the news and newspapers best avoided as these seem to be the worst for bias opinions.

I didn't used to think I was, until I got a job which meant I had to create my own 'spin' for items that may appear in the public domain. Suddenly I noticed how carefully articles in the press were worded and how careful television and radio are to present things in a certain light. You may think you are not influenced, but if your information comes from the media, then you certainly are, whether you believe it or not
