The United Way does frequent campaigns in our workplace and community. I seem to notice that they are sort of like a "conglomerate" of smaller charities. Would I be better off to donate directly to the member charities and "skip the middleman" and salaried administrators?

Thanks Tom D, I've heard about "Birthright" before but I'm not sure I want to support this as I think the easiest thing for an unwanted preganancy is to abort...even though it's unpleasant..... better than bring another life into a crowded world. Peace dude!

I was unhappy with the way they dealt with donations for 9/11, so I'm holding a grudge now. We are PRESSURED into giving to UW and looked down upon if we don't at my workplace. I don't dig bullied donations- what's the point? On the plus side though, UW really does help lots of local charities.

If you feel like your money would be better used by skipping the middle man, by all means, skip the United Way.

Every charity has some degree of overhead, just as every business has overhead. So no matter what, you are going to be paying some middleman. However, there are a number of web sites which provide information on a charity's efficiency.

If you are concerned about abortion, check-out United Way's support for Planned Parenthood.

I have been donating to United Way for the past few years through my work place. It's easy to do , the deduct it right out of your check. And at the end of the year , you can claim it on your taxes. It's only a few dollars every payday, you wont even miss it.
