Yes they are a pure breed, my neighor has a female she is red, he also has a male which is black and red, and he won't let them breed.

I haven't read up on it too much, but the red rottie is actually a genetic defect. Yes, it is most likely 'pure bred' as its parents could be AKC champions, but if it has this 'defect' you need to ask yourself if this will also have an affect on other traits. I owned a Rottie for 11 years and IMHO these are the best dogs in the world. But when choosing one, you really have to be careful of the background. Make sure that bros and sis's didn't have puppies, or mother's and son's, etc. Make sure the breeder isn't force breeding - trying to get a small block head and in the process causing pressure on the brain as it gets older. Red's are red because the black has been suppressed genetically and that may be a sign of inbreeding and such. Just be careful, these are the sweetest, smartest dogs, but are very powerful and can hurt you easily if they have something wrong with them. Also, you see poor animals who have been bred for a certain trait that makes them 'new and special' and this can contaminate a breed. A lot of these 'new and special' traits cause pain and problems for the poor lil guy as it gets older. For instance, the ragdoll kittens who have a stunted growth do not live as long as a normal cat, or breeding more white into yellow labs making what they call a 'snow lab' - these have higher tendancies for allergies and health issues. The rottweiler breed was a breed that occured naturally - originally. To alter or change that because it makes the dog different is steering away from a true rottie and therefore would not be considered or recognized as 'pure bred'.
Good Luck and I hope this helped!

There have been purebred red Rotts. Go to the AKC website and look at the standard for Rottweilers. Nowhere ever will you find where it is acceptable for a Rottweiler to be red. Not acceptable. Accidents happen and these pups can be sold as pets, but never shown, and never should a red Rott be bred! Ever! If a person is selling these dogs as show dogs or breeding them, they need to be reported to the AKC.

They are purebreed, but NOT something that should be bred for. Rottis cannot be shown as reds. They should be sold as pet quality and spayed/neutered. Any one who breeds for this mutation is just hopping on the "fad" band wagon and trying to make a buck.
