I feel like my horse and I aren't bonding well over the last year. I'd like to show his next year and I think in order to finish him I need a special bond with him and be able to become more aware of his feelings. What is the best way to go about this without him walking all over me?

This may sound stupid, but just take him out and hand graze him. You can bring a rag and rub him down after your ride while he grazes. It sounds silly, but for some reason it forms a bond more than anything else.

spend time with your horse. sometimes all it takes is giving it a kiss on the nose, or just rubbing it down when you around. I try to see my horse whenever i can get out to the barn i board at, even if its only as much as to go to her paddock and say hi. Sometimes though, bonds don't form easily between horses and owners. I was lucky, my horse picked me from the crowd, not vice versa.

learn to speak his language.

many horses bond with people even though we are predators and they are prey animals (logically, we should be eating them and they know it). others though, have a tougher time. your horse seems to be one of them.

this sets you up for having the most amazing relationship with your horse. like i said, all you have to do is learn to speak his language and he'll change quickly. he'll wait for you at the gate, and he'll follow you around without a halter. it just takes some effort on your part and time.

i'll bet your horse is trying his hardest to tell you something, but you just don't have the tools to read it.

go to www.parelli.com to learn some more. or just go a bookstore and buy a natural horsemanship book. there's a great one is by pat parelli.

i promise you that pat's program will help you bond with your horse.

It's an old Indian tradition to breathing through the nostrils of the horse and he will remember your scent.

I would say you may just want to groom him really well and give him treats but not to many also you may want to just walk him around for a while sometimes.

i don't know if it is the #1 way of bonding, but take him out to an enclosed area with only a halter on him & get on his bare back. ONLY DO THIS IF YOU FEEL CONFERETABUL WITH IT!! lie on his back, he should get used to it.

b4 u ride him/her its better to just be around him most of your time, give it treats (they luv those alot). Try to talk 2 it even if u think he doesnt understands you. walk w/ him around and be gentle. if it becomes aggressive, then you might wanna contact a vetenerian 2 c if its not sumthing medical
