The tag says hand wash warm and dry flat but I want to put it in the washer and dryer to clean it and make it smell good but I am afraid that it will get damaged if I do. What should i do?

Put it on the gentle cycle and let it soak for a while with the lid open then it will skip a few of the harsh cycles just make sure it rinses and it will come out smelling good. When you put it in the dryer put it on a low setting and check it often so it does not get too hot

If it is made of wool, don't even put it in the washer or the dryer. But, if it is cotton or acrylic, gentle cycle should work great with gentle soap and cold water. If you dry in dryer, dry on low for a few minutes, then put on air dry with no heat. That way it can't shrink from the heat.

The cleaning directions on the tag are to help you extend the life of you blanket. In most cases this means that you can go ahead and wash and dry it now and then ( I do it ). The only way you may run into a problem is if your blanket is just not made well. I have experineced that once also.
