ATA is the parallel IDE interface thats been around for years it's now commonly called PATA

SATA is the serial ATA interface becoming more common.

PATA ran at speed of 33, 66, 100 MB/s
SATA runs at 150 and 300 MB/s

they use different adapters for connecting to the motherboard. SATA is a smaller cable and transfers data a hell of alot faster than ATA.

choose a compatible hard drive and mother board that share the same connection. most new boards have 2 ATA slots and 2-4 SATA connections.
