hello, I am from the United States and was wondering what you have to take to become a english teacher. Do you have to take basics or can you skip it. I want to teach in japan. Any help would be nice. Oh yea can you possibly tell me how long it would take.

To work in Japan you need a Bachelor's degree in any subject. You can't get a work permit without a degree, and you can't get legal work without a work permit. Illegal work in Japan tends to be poorly paid (those times when your boss actually pays you!), with bad working conditions (think split shifts and lots of moving around to in-company and in-home classes). Working illegally in Japan is risky because if something happens the police WILL NOT be friendly and your home country may decide not to help you (as you're an evil law-breaker). However, many Japanese schools will hire someone who has a Bachelor's degree but no formal TESL/TEFL training. You don't need a TEFL/TESL certificate to get a work visa. I'm posting a link below, feel free to explore that website and read more about Japan. If you take the time to read the old questions, you'll find that all your questions are answered.

You usually don't need to be a teacher to teach in Japan. There are different companies that will hire native English speakers to teach in their schools. These are after school programs. The Japanese take about 11 years of English in school. The problem is that they do not hear the language. They can read and write it fine.....that's how I got un-lost in Yokohoma...they read well.....These schools will teach youwhat you need to know ...you just need a 4 year degree.

You need a degree in Education with a minor in English or a degree in English with a minor in Education.

It takes about five years usually to meet the requirements before you can take your state exams and do your student teaching.

As far as teaching English as a second language, you should be fluent in the language of the people you are wanting to teach English too.
