I was reading a book about it...a fictional one...and was just wondering what led to the rise of fascism and Nazism in Italy and Germany?

World War I was the main cause of the rise of fascism and Nazism in Italy and Germany because of the effects that were left in many countries. In Italy and Germany, World War I made a drastic change to the governments and countries themselves. The war caused large losses of lives and heavy debts in both countries. In addition, inflation and unemployment affected Germany and Italy. Consequently, there were many strikes and the governments were put into helpless situations. Because of this, Mussolini rose from the crowd and decided to find a way to fix the horrid condition of Italy. While he did so, Hitler saw Mussolini’s actions and was inspired to rise among the crowd in Germany; he wanted to restore his country to the way its economy and condition was before World War I.

is that correct?

After WWI, the economy was dying quickly in Germany, they were mad at the French, and the government was unstable. Hitler joined the small, unknown Nazi party and quickly rose to the ranks of leadership. (they were not communists btw... fascists and commies don't like each other). Hitler did the same thing in the German government and with some fine manipulation, he got himself to be a legal dictator. The Germans wanted a leader- and he was charismatic, very good with propaganda, and gave the people a scapegoat that wasn't the military. Mussolini didn't have the power or influence of Hitler. (Italy hasn't done much of anything big militarily since Rome fell)

Some have said that it is the influence and increased notoriety of one man. Adolf Hitler. What many people do not understand is that Hitler was a phenomenal public speaker. During his beer hall pushts, he would often engage in debates and speeches that left people wanting to hear more. He was quite charismatic. Because of his appeal he was able to say some really insane things and make some crazy suggestions that influenced the way that people thought. A simpler way to say this is "if the people will lead, the leaders will follow" and so his fame and ideas caught on and the rest is history!

Actually, it was probably a number of things, including the then fairly little known subject of genetics in combination with old religious doctrines. The famous actor James Woods suggested that it may have been that the German men felt defeated and therefore impotent from their loss of WW1.
But generally speaking I think it was ignorance and hate.
