Should I call Compaq ... or try to buy the CD drive and reinstall it myself? This is a laptop, so I am not as good at fixing these. Any ideas?

Go to a local computer shop and they should be able to replace it for you. Go to different shops to find the best price for a quality drive. Bestbuy might be able to do if for you but it may cost you a fortune. Dont go back to Compaq unless its under warranty still. Yes laptops arent very user friendly and it takes alittle bit of skill to get a laptop drive to put back in the laptop.

Call compaq (which is now HP since HP Bought Compaq) and see what they can do. If its under warenty tehy may ask you to send it in... They may even ship you the CD Drive for you to install it. Call them first before spending money on it. If they want you to send it in insist that you CANT and you need it for something important (you need to make it up). They should send it. They did that for me with my HP that had a hard drive issue (they were telling me to send it in and ti woudl be back in 6-8 weeks!).
