The question is the best player of the late 90's. If we count just the late 90's (that excludes the greats like gretzky) then for my money the best skater would have been Steve Yzerman. He captained them to 2 cups and just missed a third in the late 90's along with getting them a couple of Presidents trophies so I would think that put him at the top during that time span. His presence on the ice was as important as his stats, he was very clearly the heart of the Wings (and the numbers were Hall of Fame numbers too!)
As for goalies during that stretch I dont know how anyone can decide between Brodeur or Roy. It is splitting hairs to decide which was better, they are both clearly the best netminders of this era and in my mind equally gifted and very close in late 90's production.

Gretzky was still in the league, but he was already declining. Mario was retired, so can't say him. Probably Jaromir Jagr and Peter Forsberg. They were both young players in their prime.

notyavgkat2002: Notice the question says LATE 90'S. Mario didn't play from 1997-2000, so how was he the best player?

I would say either Lemieux or Patrick Roy. Similar to an earlier comment, you can't count Gretzky as his peak was in the mid to late 80s.

Both Lemieux and Roy lead their respective teams to glory...Roy almost single handedly in 1993 (ironic, beating Gretzky's Kings).

You gotta go with Gretz or Lemieux---but as teams are built from the net out you could argue for Brodeur.
