I'm not sure what causes it but I can tell you how to help her out, make her eat a lot of bananas (SP)

I know that eating disorders and an excessive use of laxatives can cause low pottasium in the blood.

Is your daughter in her teen years? Its a well known fact that girls and boys form and suffer from eating disorders in their early teens and it may continue unnoticed throughout their lives. Anorexia and bullimia aren't always as well noticed as you may think they are such as shown in tabloids because many times people don't start to just disinegrate or lose weight right before the eyes of others.

I hope this is not the case. Speak with your daughter about her self esteem if you believe this may be the cae. If you don't think so have her eat lots of bannanas and then have her blood tested again later on.

Potassium can be low from things such as diarrhea, kidney problems, and the use of diuretics (often used to lose water weight). Tobacco and caffeine can inhibit potassium absorption from foods, and stress can increase the body's need for potassium.
Some foods that are a good source of potassium:
- bananas, brown rice, apricots, garlic, and potatoes

Low potassium can occur for many reasons. Use of water pills (diuretic therapy), diarrhea, and chronic laxative abuse are the most common causes. If you are monitoring low potassium levels, you may want to avoid long, strenuous physical activities because of sweat loss of potassium. A change in diet may be recommended if you are likely to develop low potassium levels. You may increase intake of bananas, tomatoes, oranges, cantaloupes, and peaches because they are high in potassium.

Low potassium (also called hypokalemia) can be caused by insufficient potassium in her diet, excessive urination, diabetes and heredity just to name a few. I found a lot of information that might help here...
