If you look back in history, Mt. St. Helen's in Washington State erupted. It did not spew lava but it did blow the side of a mountain off. Which in turn whiped out all the trees on the mountain and then flooded the river which over flowed. The volcanoes in Hawaii are constantly spewing lava which builds up the land. Devils Tower in Wyoming is actually the core of a volcano. The land around it eroded over time and left this monument in it's place.
