When I am buying software, on the box it says minimum RAM (random access memory) colin followed by a number (64MB, 128MB, 256MB, 512MB, 1024MB (1 gigabyte), or 2048MB (2 gigabytes). Does that mean overall system memory or how much memory is needed for that specific program?

Minimum RAM means OVERALL MINIMUM RAM, however that means you will be playing that game with ALL THE high resolution graphic bells and whistles turned down or off.

However you arent done at RAM. You need to have the minimum PROCESSOR AS WELL, or else all bets are off.

Finally you need to have the Operating system requirement met as well.

If you meet all three BUY THE PROGRAM, if you are missing ONE of the THREE, FORGET IT, it will not work unless you upgrade to that minimum. Naturally if its a game, if you dont have the RECOMMENDED specs met, you are NOT getting the game you see in the magazine advertisements, just a LOW resolution, sometimes slower animated version that probably wont please you.

I could be wrong...
But for my part, I always thought that it is the minimum amount of memory needed to run your whole system.

Unless you are talking about games, there are very few programs that need that much memory.

Windows XP (which is a huge program) compared to anything else only use about 128Mb.

With 512Mb, you should be able to run any conventional program or game.
You can even run most of them on 256Mb.

overall memory. if you buy a game that says "minimum RAM: 256mb", that means you need at least 256mb of total memory. the more the better though.

Minimum specs is just that, minimum, it is the absolute minimum to get that program to run....now that doesnt mean it will run good or fast if its a game take minimum spec and multiply by 3 to get it to run good

That is the minimum amount of memory needed to run that software, thats all. It is better to have more than what is reccomended.
