Yeah minority is realtive to a context. In the context of the USA, blacks and hispanics are known a minorities relative to the anglo saxon white majority.
In the context of my old student union, trotskysts where thought of when one heard the term minority, and in the parliament right now, republicans are thought of when one hears minority, as in minority leader etc.

They aren't all I think about when I hear the term minority. Women, American Natives, Asians, Middle Easterners, the poor, and Seniors are just SOME of the ones I think of. I think it's because you are not as diversed in this area and you assume that Hispanics and Blacks are the the most mentioned minorities because you possibly are taught that or see that more often in your life than other people. There are tons of people who considered minorities for many different reasons, not necessarily race affiliated either. Perhaps you are linking the term minority with race.

Blacks and hispanics are refered to as "minorities" because they do not have the same amount of power and influence in this country as "whites" do. We tend to think of majority and minority in terms of numbers. These terms also refer to those in positions of power and authority. This is why blacks and hispanics are called "minorities", they are not currently the ones who have the "majority" of the say so.

Yea, in the U.S.A., they are thought of as the minority because they ARE the minority in most cases. In the government, they are the minority. In many colleges, they are still the minority. Even in Hollywood, I think they are the minority.

The majority makes up more than the minority. 100 years ago, Caucasions were overwhelmingly the majority. They still are today (as far as I know), and that is why other races (Asian-Americans, African-Americans, Hispanics) are considered minority races. But the numbers aren't as drastically different as they were in the past, and we are progressing towards a more even distribution in our country (of race).

that is an American expression because there are less blacks and Hispanics in the US than whites. In another country, say Africa white could be the minority race. In a Latino country white would be a minority. Understand?

I don't know, because it seems like there's plenty of mexicans go around and blacks are everywhere. Out of 10 people AT LEAST 2 people must be black otherwise the company/group is considered "racist". ASIANS are minorities. middle easterners are minorities. polynesians are minorities. (<--- in the general u.s., not big cities)

FYI: over 50 percent of california is hispanic, and 15 percent of america is black.

Although they are NOT in the minority in world population, they are in the minority in "opportunity". For some reason, Caucasians have it easier, but that is changing, so I hope you only think that way and are not a racist!
