'She moved through the the fair' was written by the poet Padraic Colum and first popularised in song by the famous John McCormack. Some believe that it was an old Donegal ballad written in the Irish language and Colum translated it. Others claim that it was his own experience of markets or fairs which inspired the poem.

"During this period Padraic came under the influence of his uncle-in-law, Micky Burns, a fowl buyer, who travelled to the fairs and markets, buying and selling chickens, ducks and turkeys for export. Micky Burns and many of his associates were ballad-singers and story-tellers, and so the young Colum imbibed the art of the ballad-singer as he watched the market in progress. The inspiration for his beautiful and perennially popular poem She Moved Through the Fair came from the hustle and banter of the market place."

Sinead O’Connor’s almost transcendental interpretation of She Moved Through The Fair was one of the highlights of the film Michael Collins.
