I originally thought I had a bee hive 50 feet up in my maple tree. I have now discovered it is a wasp nest, about the size of a frisbee and 3 inches in height. It would be almost impossible to get to the nest because it is so high up and not near any major branches. A small log was thrown at it and hit it 3 times, but didn't come out of the tree. Any suggestions for what to do about the nest? No sign of wasp activity now, but if they come back in the spring, I'll be worried about my dogs when they're outside.

They die in the winter therefore they cannot come back. Only the queens find shelter from the cold and most of them die anyway but some do survive and those that do start a new colony. That dead colony in your tree will stay dead so I wouldn't worry about it. In time it will degrade in the rain and wind and break apart.

Hi, Iam sure your are worried about the nest.I have experienced the same problem you have now.The nest was the size of a basketball, not as high as yours. The nest was left alone to deteriorate on its own.It is made up of a thin layer of paper ma shay. The wasps will not return to this nest. But that is not to say they will not build a new one in your area.

Wait till later in the evening. use a water hose with high pressure and a sprayer . soak the hive till it falls . Bees of any kind do not use the same hive , season from season they make new hives.
Or use a pressure washer the force will knock It down quicker .

Contact a local tree removal company because they have bucket trucks that can reach the nest .I know this because I own a tree service and had the same thing happen to one of my customers.

Just keep throwing the small log up to hit it. If that don't work try using a bigger log.Just don't hit your dogs with the logs.Don't give up you can do it.. Or hire a company to cut down the darn thing. And throw it over the fence at your moms.

i seen it done and it works.

Raid makes a spray sold at most stores that will shoot 30 ft. I you can get close enough it works good they drop right out. I wouldn't suggest your right under the spray. Spray at an angle
