most freshmen at my school are into Taking Back Sunday (an okay band), and MCR, and they've actually said that guitar solos are so overrated and requires no talent, and that most people don't care if you're that good.

i actually dissagree, because it does take a LOT OF SKILL to do a guitar solo.

Come on! are they overrated?

It all depends really. Some bands do throw in real bad solos, not because of technicality or skill issues, but for the fact they are boring, sound like their other solos, and are out of place. Not every song needs a solo, but if one fits and makes the song better then yeah its great. Its like the saying a good musician knows when to play, and when not to play.Malmsteen makes half the song a solo, always at top speed.Impressive, but musical quality goes down the drain.

Some very much so. there are alot of guys out there that can just blister across a fretboard but speed and flash are not everything.
but then you have guys like Carlos Santana who can play a solo that will make you smile bring tears to your eyes because of the emotion he can convey to an audience through his music. Most of the guitar greats are from the old school they learned along time ago that flash can only go so far.

I think it depends on the solo. If it matches the overall fit of the song, then I don't think that they're overrated. Actually, it would be pretty difficult to do. On the other hand, if someone is soloing just to solo, it doens't fit and therefore destroys the song.

On the other hand, if people at your school like Taking Back Sunday and My Chemical Romance, they probably don't know anything about music.

Guitar solos rock!! I especially love the one that opens the song "23" by jimmy eat world. and yes it takes a LOT of skill to master the guitar let alone preform a perfect solo.

I don't think that solos are as popular as they used to be. It does take a lot of talent just to pick up a guitar and make music with it.

I love the guitar. With the right player a guitar solo can be amazing.

No. The intro to one of Heart's songs, I think maybe "Dog and Butterfly," and the first few bars of Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven," come to mind.

I studied classical guitar for a brief spell, and can attest to the difficulty of a complex piece. No, it depends on the piece being played, and the skill of the guitarrist.

NOT AT ALL! how could they possibly think that? freaking weird people: because guitar solos are one of the most talent-oriented things that you will probably ever come across!

It takes a lot of skill. definitely. I know this kid, Max, who plays guitar and he's always wanting to perform for us. Its kind of annoying because he likes to hog the show. I imagine the guitarists in TBS and MCR are the same. Show hoggers.
