The Blu-Ray is the Sony video format that is supposedly better video quality than the DVD. The PS3 looks awesome but it will have a very narrow audience: hard core gamers. Rich hard gamers because the system itself is incredibly expensive and the games will be too.

Blu-Ray is Sony's brand of high definition video storage/media format. Compared to regular DVD, high def video formats (at present, Sony's Blu-Ray and Toshiba's HD-DVD - note: like VHS and Betamax, the two formats are NOT compatible!) presents a difference in video similar to the difference between HD TV and regular broadcast TV. Far more stunning realism, colors, definition, etc.
That's the good news. The bad news is you'll have to buy movies in the proprietary Blu-Ray format to play, and if HD-DVD ends up winning in the marketplace over Blu-Ray, eventually, these discs may end up obsolete.
Also, realize that if you buy the PS3 for this capability, you'll be forced to use the PS3 as the player for these discs. You'll also need an HDTV in order to take advantage of all the great resolution. And if your PS3 breaks because of all the gaming you're going to be doing, your Blu-Ray player is broken too.
Let me give you an example of the "bad news" - who still uses their PS2 as their primary DVD player? 'Nuff said.
Do I think it will be awesome? I think the graphics quality of the new games will be awesome. Mind you, that doesn't mean the games themselves are awesome - we have plenty of games already with stunning graphics, but the gameplay sucks. There's no value in my mind to a great looking game that no one enjoys playing.
Do I think Blu-Ray will be the long-term HD video format for the future? I have no idea...and nobody else does either. Only time and the market will tell.
So do I think the PS3 is worth the $600 that Sony is going to charge for it? Not on your life. I don't think it provides that much more value than 1) buying an Xbox 360 now, and 2) buying a HD video player after the smoke clears and the market declares which HD video format is the real winner for the long haul.
Best to you.

Different people have different views on the PS3. My opinion is that it is not as awesome as people make it out to be. Paying 500-600 dollars on a console and then paying 100 dollars a game, paying 60 dollars a movie, I think, is and absolute rip-off. It also possesses many of the same qualities of the Nintendo Wii, also releasing soon. In many cases,Sony is accused of 'stealing' Nintendo's ideas, because just as Nintendo announced a feature of the Wii, Sony did the same right after. I f you are willing to pay a lot of money for something you may not be happy with, go ahead, or if you want to spend half of that and get a much more advanced console of a new generation of gaming, consider the Wii. Either way, you will be happy. And as for the Blu-Ray, it is the kind of disc used to play movies in HD.

Blu-Ray is High definition dvd which is the next step in video evolution which is 1080p resolution.
The PS3 is going to be very good it's price tag of $599 will cause some to shy away but it will be well worth the investment when you add it all up.
Blu-ray
Wireless hub
Cordless controller
60 gig hard drive
memory card reader
It will take a few months for the really good games to come out so if your in no hurry I would just wait until spring as they will be very hard to find at launch anyway.

as to the guy who said it will have a very narrow audience, its sold out at every store in north america---and its not released til friday, nov 17th, 2006---this friday
people on ebay are bidding $2000+ to buy the reserved ps3s off people and the bids are expected to hit $5000 on friday,
