more recent hypothesis is that yawning is used for regulation of body temperature. Another hypothesis is that yawns are caused by the same chemicals (neurotransmitters) in the brain that affect emotions, mood, appetite and other phenomena. These chemicals include serotonin, dopamine, glutamic acid and nitric oxide. As more of these compounds are activated in the brain, the frequency of yawning increases

I believe that its a misconception that yawning means you need to sleep- you just feel tired temporarily because of lack of oxygen. Therefore you would still need sleep even if you don't yawn because of wearing an oxygen cylinder.

I have actually looked into this before. There are 3 theories. Boredom, Tiredness and lack of oxegen. Lack of oxygen is the favourite but you don't see athletes yawning after their races. The theory has a lot of variables. The truth is that none of us know for sure why we really yawn. It's a mystery yet to be resolved.

Yawning as someone else said is contagious, but not only when you see someone yawn, but also if you hear some one yawn. I yawn when I'm tired/board and also when I wake up some times. but have no idea why? I don't think it lack of oxygen though.

She needs to quit smoking and get oxygen. A lack of O2 will cause all the symptoms you described. It is very severe and can lead to permanent heart and brain damage and a much shortened life. The Dr.'s right, if she has O2 and smokes, it can burst into flames and kill her and anyone in the house. You hear about it in the news all the time. If she keeps smoking and gets no O2, she's dead fairly soon. If she quits smoking and gets O2, she may have many decent years left. Her choice, but you may be able to influence it.

yawning actually increases the concentration on CO2 in the blood. It signals your brain that it needs to increase the rate of respiration. So regardless if you are bored or tired it increases how afst you breath and therefore indirectly increases your oxygenation rate

Tired, bored or cos we're looking at someone else doing it. But not through lack of oxygen.

And if we had oxygen masks strapped tightly to our faces, or a tank on our backs (like divers), it would be too uncomfortable to sleep.

Most defiantly we would still need to sleep. We can fall to sleep without yawning.

Just to digress slightly. My dad had his larynx removed in the summer, but he still yawns, which is weird considering that he now breathes through his shunt/hole in his neck

we yawn because of the increasing amnts of carbon dioxide in the body, hence we yawn to remove carbon dioxide and take in oxyger at a faster rate,..just like when we pant after vigourous muscular exercise...
