I live in a 30 yr old sub-division so there are quite a few large trees and across the street from a RR track that has lots of brush. I'm in central Indiana. With those facts can you help me find the best bird seed to attract a variety of birds? I seem to only get sparrows and an occasional Blue Jay or Cardinal. I have tried the reg. mixed seed and also just black oil sunflower--still only sparrows. I love sparrows but would like to attract some colorful birds.

Find a Wild Birds Unlimited store in your area (or other bird specialist) and buy their deluxe mix. Most of what you get at grocery stores and big box retailers is crap seed that ends up on the ground. Premium bird seed will not only last a lot longer, but it also attracts better birds and makes a much smaller mess.

To get the prettiest songbirds like cardinals use black oiled sunflower seeds, sometimes it takes a while for them to find the seed. We have them thick in the winter. You may need more trees or shrubs for the protection of the birds.
