First the hinges on my laptop broke, then a few weeks later it started turning off (losing its power supply) whenever I moved it, and then the next day, it lost power and I haven't been able to turn it on again since.
Is it possible for me to retrieve files from the broken laptop simply by connecting it to my new laptop, or am I going to have to open up the old laptop and take out the hard drive?

You'll have to remove the old hard drive, but it's really not that hard... on the back of your laptop should be a bunch of panels that come off... under one of them is the harddrive. Unscrew and VIOLA, you've got all your data... Now go buy a $3.00 adapter from ebay and you're set... When you buy, you're looking for a 2.5" USB HD enclosure... what'll pretty much happen is you're gonna turn your old HD into an external HD, kinda like athumb drive. Take out the hard drive and slave it to your new laptop. They have cases that you put the hard drive in that connects using a usb port, and is really simple to do. Good luck
