I would be interested to hear from any freelance web designers out there. How much do you pay in tax, V.A.T etc. How much of a project price do you actually take home?

In the U.S. you have sales tax, and income tax plus the cost of your software and system. Also, if you work through a freelance site like eLance, you pay them a commission on every project. In the US, self-employed people pay full social security with their income tax vs. if you work for someone else, you pay half and the employer pays half. I quit freelancing a couple years ago when my second child was born, but then my software suite was costing me $1800 per year. I think you do a lot better working for a larger company who has a full time sales staff because getting the jobs really eats up your time and you are always competing against designers in third world countries who are willing to work for 50 cents an hour. After expenses taxes and commissions, I got to keep about 40% of what I charged and my software and hardware had to come out of that 40% I kept.

The lowest I have ever heard of someone charging to do web design work was $2500. It goes up from there. Shop around and make sure that you look at some samples of their work in order to get a feel for what they will charge you and to make sure that the work is not amateur. Good luck.

Freelance artists aren't businesses, therefore, no tax.
