Take off in first gear with the pedal to the metal until the valves just start to float or you hit a flat spot in the RPM. Observe the RPM at which this occurs and back off right away. Set your red line about 200 RPM lower than what you observed. Usually 6000 rpm is the area at which this happens.

I run a 406, 6in. rod smallblock in my dirt modified. I would say a "safe" rpm range would be 6500 to 6800. I Have turned it as much as 7200 rpm.
