A liger is from a male lion + female tiger. A tigon is from a male tiger + female lion. Because lions and tigers are so genetically similar, they can mate with each other. This situation never happens in the wild because they live in entirely different habitats. Lions and tigers also have distinct social structures and personalities which inhibit these cats from getting together in nature.
