There was a drowning...it was the magicians double...right? And the person hanged...was the twin brother....right?

Any other insights would be appreciated.

The Prestige is a movie about two magicians who are both obsessed with magic and on being the best among all magicians...The characters are played by Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale...

Christian Bale's character is so obsessed with magic that he literally shared a life with his twin brother. They share the same name and the same career. Not even his wife knew his secret. Bale became famous for his trick called "the transported man". Later, one of the twins got framed for Jackman's murder and was hanged.

On the other hand Hugh Jackman's character first became obsessed with magic after her wife died onstage while performing a trick. Apparently the incident was caused by Bale's mistake (he tied the wrong knot). So as revenge Jackman swore to be a better magician than Bale and even stole Bale's trick "the transpoted man". But then Jackman sought to better this trick by asking Tesla to create a transporting machine for him. However. Tesla's machine turned out to be a cloning machine. So what Jackman did was to drown each "clone" every night that he performed the trick....and to avoid his secret from becoming exposed all the assistants that he hired were blind.

In the end both character paid a high price in exchange for their prestige. Bale's payment came in the death of his twin and the suicide of his wife. While Jackman's came in the form of his conscience...after all he was never sure whether the man he drowned was the clone or the original man.

The Prestige The Movie

The Tesla device cloned Hugh Jackman and then sent the original up to the balcony. Though at the point in time of the cloning he became two people, and the consciousness was split in two, so it's actually impossible to define one as "The Clone" and the other as "The Original."

The Christian Bale on the other hand, was actually a twin. He WAS using a true double for his act, just as Micheal Cane has guessed in the beginning. This is foreshadowed about ten times through out the movie.

There's the bird trick, in which the little boy asks, "But where is it's brother?"

Then when the fishbowl trick is revealed, Christian Bale says, "That's how he does it, he LIVES the act."

And of course the numerous times that Sarah says that she can tell he doesn't mean it when he says he loves her.

it's simple- The one man had a twin and when he was shot and lost some of his fingers, his twin also cut off his fingers so they would still be alike. They took turns being the helper and the real guy. The twin was the one framed for murder and hanged in prison. The other magician was desperate for the secret behind "transported man" that he went to see Tesla who made a cloning machine for him. The clone would drown every night and the original guy would appear to the audience.

you basically have it . .

the person hanged was the twin brother ..

the drowning was a little different. the machine created a duplicate person who was the same . . .like a star trek transporter that ended up with two copies .. so each night, one copy of the person drowned and was taken away and disposed of.

But I think Angier (Jackman) was still alive at the end in the tank (i didnt spot it myself burt I've read accounts of a bubble coming from his mouth in the final shot...anyone else spot it?). That would mean the Angier shot was a copy from the trannsporter machine.

But you're right Bale had a twin and Jackman had duplicates.

You got it right. the one got hang is one of the twin. and they take turns to do transportation magic. meaning big one do the ending(prestige) this time, and little one do it next time.

while the other one use dupe or clone to split him into two. even he doesn't know which one of him gets drown. There're 100 of his dupes.

Actually, he was only drowned once. The other times, he would shoot them.
