the shortest and longest days of the year vary, in the northern hemisphere the shortest day is on december 21 or 22, the longest day June 21 or 22. in contrast, the southern hemisphere is a complete flip flop of the northern hemisphere, this being said, the longest day of the year is on december 21 or 22 due to the sunlight reaching the southern hemisphere more than the northern hemisphere due to the angle of the earth...

Lots of different answers taking with slightly different takes on the question eg whether you take 'day' as the daylight portion of the standard 24 hour period etc. In fact I think that there may be a couple of days (24 hr periods) during the year which are very slightly longer and a couple which are very slightly shorter due to the Earth's orbit around the sun being not completely circular but very slightly elliptical. It is of course the Earth's daily rotation about the centre of the earth/moon system which gives us our days but this elliptical orbit might be expected to slightly affect the 24hr length - anyone explain and quantify this better than I can?

In reality a day is 24 hours long no matter what time of the year you are asking (well, just short of 24 hours, that's why we have leap years, but who's counting). But if you want to know the days with the most and least sunlight. Then that is June 21st and December 21st respectively.

The longest day is in the middle of summer, June 21st or 22nd north of the equator. That's called the summer solstice Image indicating mouse-over for phonetic pronounciation. The shortest day is in the middle of winter, around December 21st or 22nd, north of the equator. That's called the winter solstice.
But right in between winter and summer, this year on March 20th, day and night are each 12 hours long. This is called the vernal equinox . It is the first day of spring north of the equator, and the first day of autumn in the southern half of the world.
In between summer and winter there is another equinox, called the autumnal equinox. Just like the vernal equinox, day and night are the same length. Only this change is the first day of autumn north of the equator, and the start of spring to the south.

21st June is the longers day and then 6 months later 21st Dec is the shortest day.
However, technically every day is 23hrs 56mins & 4 Seconds long, this is why we have leap years as it keeps our present calendar (the Gegorian calendar) in check (well that's what I read).
