It's not a very valuable coin. The value of that coin to a coin collector really depends on the condition. A heavily used 1949 penny is worth about 10 cents. A really nice one that looks like it's never been used is worth maybe $4. If it was minted in San Francisco (a small 'S' will be just below 1949), then it would be worth from 20 cents to $6.

There were 217,775,000 cents minted at the Philadelphia mint in 1949. Since the mint mark is under the date, I presume there is none, so it was struck in Philly. In low grades it is worth a couple of cents, even in high mint state grade, they sell for less than $2,50. So is it a collectible coin, yes, is it worth a lot now, no.

Yes, very good condition or better and the coin should be worth quite a bit. Either pick up a copy of CoinWorld or go to the website for PCGS, in my opinion, the premier coin grading service in the country.
