I took the test many, many years ago. I scored a 1430: 740M,690V.
I am not rich and couldnt afford the prep course but I did buy the Real SATs and practiced for over 3 months.

I am organizing a committee at school to increase Hispanic admit rates, and SAT scores are very important and can be improved with studying.

my SAT scores were very high, but i won't put them here.
i find that what helps even more than studying is reading. you can internalize grammatical structure a lot better when you read it in a book instead of in a study guide. no study guide is a silver bullet- but i took the SAT practice tests from the college board book (about 5 of them) and got 99th percentile. i am very much against SAT prep courses; i think they defeat the purpose of the test and give great advantages to the rich.
i applaud your cause.

The SAT s have changed just recently. There is now a writting section and the total score is now out of 2400. The test in incredibly long at about 3.5-5 hours. I just wanted to put that out there. I scored a 1830. 600 math 650 English 580 on the writting.
