I think that Queen Elizabeth II is a rather awesome woman. She came to the throne when she was quite young and while it is true that she lives in luxury, she has devoted her life to her country. She was a very public figure during World War II, and was involved at the grass roots in helping her country. And goodness knows that her children have given her a few headaches! I don't think the monarchy will be quite the same when she is gone.

My favourite hero is Captain Oates, from Scott's tragic South Pole expedition. Oates is a true hero as he gave his life, so the other members of the expedition could stand a chance to survive and that took a great deal of guts. He left the tent in the middle of a blizzard after uttering the famous words; "I'm just going outside and might be a while" on his birthday; 17th of March 1912. Unfortunately the other members didn't survive, thanks to Scott's egotism, but Oates didn't die in vain, because his spirit became a symbol of true heroism in the years to come, especially during World War 1.

PS: Just a note to Scotslad; William Wallace never starred in "Braveheart", but Mel Gibson did, playing William Wallace!

Earnest Shackleton, the other great south polar explorer. After leaving his men,(Elephant Island?) he sailed hundreds of miles in an open boat in antarctic waters, crossed mountains and glaciers in freezing conditions with pitiful provisions and equipment, finally getting help from the whaling station in South Georgia to rescue all his men and bring them home safely. A feat even the S.A.S. today would be hard pressed to follow. He did it with as much his indominitable will and determination, as his fortitude and stamina.

Sir Winston Churchill. For the courage he displayed sending thousands ( millions) of men into battle to fight a righteous war and knowing the consequences and having to mourn them the rest of his life. In his mind and soul.

Stephen Hawking for his indomitable spirit and strength. A grand example of the power of the human mind and soul.
