The demonstration by the girl seems like it would hurt the guys.
Especially when she steps on one of their stomachs at the end.
How come those guys don't seem hurt?

Thanks (I might join Karate thats why I want to know)

if you mean the part when she walks across his stomache. that doesnt hurt at all. if you flex right before she steps on you and she gets off quick enough it should hurt. unless you have no ab muscles. also that girl looks like she weighs about 100 pounds.

In karate, you Kiai when you are stuck. It is something like a yell but you really start it as a tightening at the lowest point in you abdomen that proceeds up. So the noise is really a result of the tightening not just a yell. You can actually take a very hard blow to the body when you do it properly. This is the way we learned it in Shotokan Karate.

In Northern Shaolin Kung Fu, we learned a martial form of Chi Gong called Little Golden Bell. In this approach, it is more like you fill up your lungs with air and push down without closing at the glottis. You transfer the energy stored in this ballon of air and body to the point at which you will be struck and can take very hard blows at that point. It is a little more precise than the kiai approach and harder to learn to do properly.

It is very important to build up to these types of blow tolerance gradually so you really understand what you are doing. Otherwise, you are quite likely to get hurt.

Ouch. Maybe there's a trick to what they're doing.
