If you have the ability to scan photos and other items in to your computer you can buy special printer paper that will allow you to transfer the images onto fabric which makes it easier to put special photos or important events in the persons life ( ex wedding announcements, birth announcements ,tickets to important trips use your imagination anything that will scan will work). Also try using fabric colors that your mother would have really liked. Another thing you could use is a block pattern that might represent some idea or value that your mother would have represented. This should be an important project for you ask yourself how can I represent my mother's life so someone viewing the quilt that never ment your mother would feel a connection to her?

Have made memory quilts & anything you can photo copy onto fabric
makes a wonderful memory quilt.....photos of mom as a child, high school
graduation certificate, marriage license, fotos from a newspaper, any material
from a garment she wore, fotos of her animals, vacation fotos, the house where she grew up in, a town sign where she lived or state sign
Fotos can be framed with fabric or a quilt block can include a foto in its
squares..use Mom's fave colors
Anything mom has that can be attached to the quilt with safety pins to
be removed when washing the quilt/wallhanging
Be sure to sigh & date the finished item, adding your name as creator
This, too, could be made into a block on the front for info on mom
Just get started & you will come up with more things as you go along!

I'm going to be doing the same thing. My mother passed away just a few weeks ago. I was going to donate her clothing, but then decided to cut it up into blocks and make a quilt; probably more than one. That way I'll feel like she's still with me.

I love the idea of using someone's favorite tee or sweat shirts as the big blocks of the quilt.

I've made memory teddy bears for some kids that lost their father. I took their dad's t-shirts and made them into various parts of the bear. That way, the child could hug the bear and feel close to his dad.

scanning pictures is a good idea, and another thing that would be cool is not just getting pictures, but get things that she liked. if she collected something, for example ducks(weird, I know) find cute randomn pictures of those and use them mixed with the real pictures. you can make a theme of it.
