Last night when we got home, all 3 floors ceilings were filled with smoke. We couldn't find the source of it. We cleared out the smoke by opening windows and turning on fans. Nothing else happened last night.

Well, this evening my son was down in the basement where our reck room is and he brought me a burnt up night light bulb that was not attached to the metal screw in he stated that he heard it pop. I went downstairs to see and sure enough there was smoke marks on the wall behind where the bulb was. The smell was the same as it was last night.

What would cause it to do this and how can I prevent it in the future?

A guess and only a guess is that you lost your Neutral on you electrical system and it is backing through the system. Very possibly outside damage (mast or pole).
