Is there an easy way to install the switch without turning off the power or shocking yourself? Is the same true for installing a light in the ceiling where there is pre-existing wiring?

The only way to safely install the dimmer switch is to turn off the power.
Oh you can do it with the power on, but it will absolutely SHOCK the stew out of you. So I wouldn't recommend it.

As for the overhead light, same holds true, although I have seen brave guys wire overhead with the power on. Tricky business though and shocking enlightment.

Just be safe...Turn off the power, please!

Any time you leave the power on yoou have the chace of getting a shock or shorting somthing out which leads to more problems to solve. Just cut the poer off and be safe than be sorry

Turn the power off. And if you have to ask maybe you should have someone else install the dimmer.

You never turn off the power....but the danger is especially risky if you do not know what you are doing.

Flip the circuit breaker OR turn off the fuse. When the light doesn;t work...you have turned off the circuit. Simple..

CHange the switch according to the directions. .

Although, I have heard, wear a good pair of leather gloves and be certain to keep yourself from touching anything or anyone else while you are preforming this daring feat
