The Fan your electrician talking about is one that has a timed delay. This has to have an isolation switch on the mains feed to the fan. It also has a secondary live from the switched side of your bathroom light, so that when the light is switched on the fan comes on, but when you switch the light off the fan continues for a few minutes longer to extract the steam/smells from the bath room. The fan you need is a fan that detects humidity, these only come on when the bathroom is steamy. your electrician should be able to get this type of fan from an electrical wholesalers

It's better to have them on a separate switch. That way you can just have the light on without the fan and visa-versa.
Remember every time you turn the fan on, you introduce outside air into the house because it makes the house slightly negative so you don't want to run it for no reason when the heat or A/C is on. Put a 15 minute timer on the fart fan.

Separate- there is one in my mother's bathroom that goes on every time you switch on the light- even of you're just popping in to get something or to the loo late at night the noise wakes everyone. Plus it goes on for about 2min after you turn the light off. I think your electrician is just trying to save himself a job- have it separate.

Your electrician is correct. In our other house we had seperate switches, and NOBODY including myself ever turned it on.
Smelly ,steamy bathrooms are not for me now, as we have it wired to the light.

I agree with those who vote for separate. Money savings in elect will be small, but if a fan runs all the time, it will wear out faster. I only use mine when I absolutely must.
Good question!

two switches,
one go to Lt bulb (energy saving)
the other is a TIMER switch got it
without this type of switch you are wasting heat in the Winter and cooling in the Summer.

i install remote fans allot. i will never have a shaking tin can of a fan again

He`s only saying that because its an easier job to do.

Go for the separate switch, definitely.

If your bathroom has a window, then 2 switches. I think if it doesn't have a window you have to have it come on with the light to comply with building regs.
