depends on the story version. sometimes it is, other times its not. i always thought it was two different swords. the way i remember it, arthur pulled the sword out of the stone to prove his right to be king of britain. then he went to the lady of the lake who gave him excalibur and its magical sheath. but as all stories of arthur vary, you decide.
In surviving accounts of Arthur, there are two originally separate legends about the sword's origin. The first is the "Sword in the Stone" legend, originally appearing in Robert de Boron's poem Merlin, in which Excalibur can only be drawn from the stone by Arthur, the rightful king. The second comes from the later Post-Vulgate Suite du Merlin, which was taken up by Sir Thomas Malory. Here, Arthur receives Excalibur from the Lady of the Lake after breaking his first sword in a fight with King Pellinore. The Lady of the Lake calls the sword "Excalibur, that is as to say as Cut-steel."

Yes. The holder of the sword, Excalibur, would be King. King Penddragon drove the sword into the stone just before his death during battle. He spoke that only the true heir to the throne would retrieve the sword. There it stayed until Arthur removed it.
He later shattered the sword doing battle with Sir Lancelot when they first met. Lancelot believed he was the greatest swordsman that lived and Arthur challenged him to test him as one of his knights.
The battle ended in a draw with Arthur shattering Excalibur. Later the Lady Of The Lake replaced the sword to Arthur to rule his Kingdom.
It is also believed that the Arthur Story is only a myth. I really enjoyed the original writings of the story. The people of that time must have really needed a good ruler.

Most stories say Yes. Merlin was given Excalibur by the Lady of the Lake and he gave to Uther who drove it into the stone to keep the sword of kings from his enemies when he was ambushed while chasing Merlin to get Arthur back.
Now when Arthur grew up he pulled the Sword out of the Stone and rules with Excalibur which was great but as Merlin told him the sheathe was better since while worn wounds would not bleed but Arthur lost sheathe and at the End after killing his son Modred he had the sword returned to the Lady of the Lake who will give it only to Arthur when he returns to lead Britain again.
Some say No that Excalibur was only given to Arthur after he was king.
I like the 1st story better

No, the sword in the stone and Excalibur are not the same sword. The sword that was placed in the stone was the one that was shattered when Arthur was in battle with King Pellinor. After that one broke, he received the sword "Excalibur" from the Lady in the Lake to replace it.

Without a doubt. Excalibur is the sword in the stone. You should pay closer attention to Merlin's words.

the majority would say that yes, they are the same sword.
but the more accepted version is that the excalibur is given from the Lady of the Lake.
