It's a place where bodies are placed (after death, obviously). The way I remember being told, if you were too poor to afford a burial plot in medieval times, your mortal remains were placed in a charnel house. When the flesh was rotted away, the bones of several bodies were placed in one grave. Once cremation became more available, the practice of using charnel houses dropped out of practice.
Many years ago, I was working as an excavator on an archaeological dig, and we ended up digging up a medieval charnel house, which is how I know this.
