f(x) = x² - x - 4
f(x) = x² - x + 1/4 - 1/4 - 4
f(x) = (x - 1/2)² - 5/4

Find f(x+h)-f(x)/h

f(x + h) = (x + h)^2 - (x + h) - 4
f(x + h) = ((x + h)(x + h)) - (x + h) - 4
f(x + h) = (x^2 + xh + xh + h^2) - x - h - 4
f(x + h) = x^2 + 2xh + h^2 - x - h - 4

(f(x + h) - f(x))/h = ((x^2 + 2xh + h^2 - x - h - 4) - (x^2 - x - 4))/h
f(x + h) - f(x)/h = (x^2 + 2xh + h^2 - x - h - 4 - x^2 + x + 4)/h
f(x+h) - f(x)/h = ((1 - 1)x^2 + 2xh + h^2 + (-1 + 1)x - h + (-4 + 4))/h
f(x + h) - f(x)/h = (2xh + h^2 - h)/h
f(x + h) - f(x)/h = (h^2 + (2x - 1)h)/h
f(x + h) - f(x)/h = (h(h + 2x - 1))/h

ANS : h + 2x - 1

i assume you ask (f(x+h)-f(x))/h

f(x+h)=(x+h)^2-(x+h)-4 = x^2+2hx+h^2-x-h-4

then
f(x+h)-f(x) = h^2+2hx-h

and
(f(x+h)-f(x))/h = h+2x-1
