Boob tube - idiot box, etc. All refer to watching TV as a mindless activity. Boob tube originated when it was popular to call someone who acted dumb, 'boob'.

Tube rhymes with boob. Or maybe you have to be a boob to watch the TV (picture Tube).

In days past, a boob was a dull, stupid or empty headed person. To be captivated by the television turned you into such an empty headed person. Also, the television was intended to entertain people with empty heads, thus, the boob tube. it takes no brains to watch television.

Long ago, vacuum tubes were used in televisions. "Boob" refers to the zombie-like state people get staring at it, as in "What a boob, s/he doesn't know what day it is."

A "boob" is old slang for a foolish or stupid person. Television then, as now, was full of silly, childish entertainment, and it was thought that watching all that tripe would make you a "boob."
These days, there are studies that prove just that!

Because much of the events and situations which is portrayed on tv is fantasy, it just doesn't happen that way in real life.
